These past couple of days I have had a question rolling around in my mind that’s been hard to shake. You know the problem; when you hear a song and you keep singing it over and over in your head?
The question…. How am I showing up as a father, husband, brother, son, friend etc. We all have roles that make up our lives. For me I counted 23 roles. Try this exercise. Write down every possible role that makes up your life. Think out of the box. For example you are a neighbor to somebody, perhaps you are a customer, or a patient. Maybe you are a co-worker, you get the idea.
Next I want you to ask this question. How am I showing up in these roles? For example, my role as a neighbor, am I the guy that just waves to my neighbors or do I actually take the time to get to know them?
Am I the friend that is always too busy for my friends? And when I do finally have a conversation is the conversation more about me, or am I taking a sincere interest in catching up with their life?
I think if we are honest with the question, we can see many areas where we may falling short in the many roles we play.
I am going to purpose in my heart to show up a little bit more in many of my roles. So as not to get overwhelmed, I am going to show up just a little bit better on the roles that would make the most impact. Well, speaking of showing up, I am being called to dinner. Here is my chance for improvement.
Am I going to scarf down my meal, or use it as a chance to catch up on everyone’s day?
I always welcome your comments below. It is great to hear others input.
