Rodney's Reads

Author:  Gary Vaynerchuck

Publisher: Harper Collins Books

Published: 2009

This book is a fast 142 page read. The author (Gary) starts out with one of my personal favorite topics…. “Passion Is Everything” The first line in the book….“How badly do you want to crush it? Is it an all-consuming feeling? Do you stay awake at night, your brain swimming with ideas and dreams”?

He understands that for someone to get ahead, they better have a BIG dream. This is often one of the single most key ingredients in any successful venture. I am sure you have heard this before, but Gary has a way of driving this home. He truly walks his talk. He is a passionate man with big dreams.

Gary started out working for his father’s liquor store in the late 90’s He grew the company from 2 million a year as a brick and mortar business, to an internet sensation currently doing over 60 million a year in sales.

How did he do it? He started doing YouTube videos in February 2006 doing wine tasting and talking about what wines go with what foods etc. Four years ago he was an anomaly, a guy that had very little computer skills who stumbled onto an idea to promote a wine show on Facebook, twitter, and Tumblr. He discovered…

SOCAIL MEDIA MARKETING…

He proved that we live in an amazing time where you no longer have to have a lot of money for marketing, connections, or an Ivy league education to WIN in the business game. If you are willing to work hard and you have a passion for what you are doing you have a great chance of  “Crushing it”

He goes on to talk about the importance of building YOUR BRAND and gives you some simple steps to do this. A strong point he makes in the book is that the “Eyeballs” are moving away from the television sets. We have an opportunity to create our own interesting and educational content, through writing a blog, or creating some type of vido blog using Youtube or Ustream. If we get enough viewers, we too will have advertisers itching to pay us to promote their products. He gives the reader a blue print on how to get started in Social Media Marketing.

If you are serious about learning how to market your brand on the internet, I would recommend this read. It’s not going to go as deep as some books on the subject of SMM but it’s a great start. Gary is someone that you will want to follow through his entrepreneurial career. It’s good to find role models;  I think his work ethic and ideas are worth checking out.

I give this book Three *** from a possible five.
